No 3D for Samsung smartphones

Apple is rumoured to be working on one. HTC and LG already have one. Yet it seems Samsung has no plans to follow suit by introducing 3D technology to its smartphone range.

Speculation had been rife that the new Samsung Galaxy S III might house some kind of 3D technology when it arrives later this year be it a display, camera or both.

In terms of a 3D display Samsung has vehemently denied working on one for the Galaxy S III or any other potential handset for that matter, which may put to bed any hope of a 3D camera too.

In a statement ?to Engadget, Samsung said:?“Although Samsung Electronics is constantly exploring new technologies for our mobile devices, we have no immediate plan to include displays featuring 3D technology in our upcoming smartphones.”

So there you have it. Or is Samsung trying to pull the wool over our eyes?

HTC and LG have already hit the market with their 3D smartphones in the shape of the HTC EVO 3D and LG Optimus 3D respectively, while Apple is currently working on a 3D camera for all its iOS devices.

Could the next iPhone feature a 3D camera and a detachable DSLR lens? The iPhone PRO is the brainchild of designer Jinyoung Choi and is very much caters to the photography enthusiast. With a 4.5-inch LCD screen, the iPhone PRO would be considerably bigger than the current iPhone 4S with dimensions measuring 128 x 73 x 9.6 mm.

Found on the back of the handset in a central position is a 1.2-megapixel 3D camera that can be hooked up to a DSLR lens that in turn doubles up as a projector with embedded speakers. There’s even a removable hard disk at the bottom of the phone.

Before you all get too excited, this is just a concept. However, the latest iOS update would theoretically support the iPhone PRO’s credentials. Here at Pocket-lint we certainly hope Jinyoung Choi’s vision becomes reality. Even if it might cause the odd look while in your pocket.

3D technology certainly appears to be on Apple’s roadmap after details emerged that the Cupertino outfit has been working on a 3D camera for its iOS devices.

Apple working on 3D camera

Apple has been suspiciously quiet when it comes to 3D. However, it’s now emerged that the Cupertino lab coats have been busily working away on three-dimensional technology that Apple claims will blow its rivals away.?

Apple says its 3D camera will maintain more colour, while also boasting both face recognition and facial gesturing recognition, which will complement its retina displays found currently on the iPhone 4S and the new iPad.

What’s particularly interesting is that the 3D technology is supposedly being prepared for a variety of electronic devices, not just future iPhones, iPads and Apple computers. Could we be seeing a dedicated Apple camera in the near future?

Sadly there’s no word on when we might be able to witness this allegedly groundbreaking tech. However, the fact Apple patented the application in Q3 last year, coupled with these details that have emerged, we’re hopeful it might not be too long a wait.

Volvo Ocean Race: Wet, wild and in 3D

For the first time ever, the Volvo Ocean Race will feature a 3D film as part of its Race Village Experience in each of the 10 port stopovers. And viewers will be treated to a stereoscopic treat that was a real labour of love for the cinematographers.

Ten miles out to sea off the coast of Cascais, Portugal, is not the easiest place to film, with three-metre swells, 40-50 km/h winds and 30 knots of speed - especially when trying to handle a custom-rigged 3D camera.

However, photography director Don Rutherford and film director Rick Deppe successfully managed to shoot plenty of 3D footage of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, and lived to tell the tale.

Rutherford was in a small, 15-foot rubber inflatable boat alongside the imposing, black Abu Dhabi yacht known as Azzam. Deppe, for his part, was on board, using specially mounted GoPro 3D camera kits to capture stereoscopic footage that has never been seen before of Volvo Open 70s sailing.

“Shooting footage of a Volvo Open 70 in rough seas is one of the toughest things to do for any videographer,” Deppe said. “3D adds another element to that complexity.”

Deppe should know. He won the Media Crew Member Award in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 and was a videographer for the popular Discovery Channel series “The Deadliest Catch.”

This time around in the race, Deppe oversaw each team’s on-board media crew member. He was also the creative director of the Race Village 3D short film.

“Our idea is to capture the texture of sailing on board and bring it to life in 3D, while also bringing the characters of this race closer to the audience by adding a whole new dimension to the pictures,” he said.

In order for 3D footage to work, camera lenses have to be absolutely free of water with the right and left camera pictures needing to match up perfectly in order to create a clear 3D image. And the stability of the camera is also of utmost important as the depth of the picture takes on added importance.

“Can you wipe the lens?” barked Rutherford at his production assistant. At 30 knots, bobbing up and down, that’s equivalent to trying to write something on a notepad while jumping on a trampoline.

The RIB surged ahead at over 50 km/h, lurching with every wave. The twin 150-horsepower engines were at full bore and kept the small boat just meters ahead of Azzam. It crossed in front of Azzam, as the racing yacht cut through the water like a knife. All the while, Rutherford and his 3D camera kept steady focus on the bow. Five, six, seven seconds of footage…

“We have our shot!” yelled Rutherford.

And so too will fans in the 3D Cinema at the Race Village Experience.

Update: The 55-inch glasses free monster is available now, online and in-store. Find out more at www.johnlewis.com.

Toshiba has announced that the full version of its ZL2 glasses-less 3D TV will be available to order from Monday 12 March. It will be first available from the Oxford Street, London, branch of John Lewis, and then will hit stores nationally. Harrods will be stocking the set from next week too.

The real juicy specs on the ZL2 include the fact that it is the first commercially availably 4K television at the 55-inch size. QuadHD means you get?3,840 x 2,160 resolution, which equates to huge amounts of detail on screen, should you have media of the same res. To put this in perspective, an 8-megapixel still would be shown at full size.

Announced at the Toshiba conference in Watford, it is due to hit stores priced at ?6,999, somewhat unsurprisingly given the amount of tech in the ZL2. Another particularly impressive feature is that the television can intelligently track faces and line up the glasses-free 3D with several viewers for optimum quality from different viewing angles. You also get QuadHD upscaling on standard definition and high definition content.?

A beast of a television set then. Pocket-lint will have more on this retina-pleasing behemoth once we get our eyes on it.

LG Optimus 3D Max could still be coming to UK after all

Yesterday, the internet was awash with claims that the LG Optimus 3D Max, the autostereoscopic handset Pocket-lint tried and tested at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, was definitely not coming to the UK. A British retailer "tipped off" numerous tech sites that it had been told such by the manufacturer itself, who then ran the story as gospel.

However, Pocket-lint can reveal that LG has made no such decision. The company is still deciding whether to release it on these shores.

Our contact within the manufacturer informs us that, when it comes to the Optimus 3D Max, "it's still in discussion", and that there has been "no decision on specific countries yet".

Therefore, LG may still release its successor to the Optimus 3D in the UK. And until there is official confirmation otherwise, we very much look forward to getting more playtime with the handset, the?existence?of which we exclusively revealed back in September last year.

Plans to release the non-3D LG Optimus 4X HD in the UK are still forging ahead, with some suggesting a June release.

LG continues to invest in 3D phones with the launch of the follow up to the LG Optimus 3D - the LG Optimus 3D Max - and we've already managed to bag a hands-on with the new phone at a behind-closed-doors event at Mobile World Congress.

First impressions, before we get you a full review, is that the new phone is considerably slimmer than the Optimus 3D from last year.

Also noticeable straight away is that while the phone boasts 3D capabilities, from the design they very much take a back seat, whether it is the dual-lens setup on the back of the device - now almost flush with the design - or the small 3D button to launch the 3D area of the phone.

To be released in South Korea first, through SK Telecom, the Max comes with 4.3-inch autostereoscopic (glasses-free) LCD touch screen, a rear-mounted 5-megapixel camera with dual lenses (for 3D capture), VGA camera on the front, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and NFC.

It will feature 16GB of on-board storage. The battery is of the 1520 mAh variety.?In an interesting move, the phone comes with only Android 2.3 rather than Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

What's different with the Optimus 3D Max to the Optimus 3D, is that it will also come with the ability to turn any game 3D, regardless of whether it has been developed in 3D or not. Called the 3D Game Converter, In action this looks great and it means that you get the 3D experience - whether the developers wanted it or not.

The new LG Optimus 3D Max is expected in the UK in the near future. We wll have a full review of the new phone in the coming months.?
