Nintendo DS goes three dimensional
Nintendo 3DS detailed at E3. Gaming, Nintendo, Nintendo 3ds, Consoles, Handhelds, 3D games 0

At the E3 event out in LA, Nintendo has made the announcement of a next-gen DS. The new model – the Nintendo 3DS – takes in the major trend of 3D and slots it into a handheld gaming console – and it’s glasses free.

What Nintendo promises is greatly improved graphics, the 3DS will get a 3.5-inch screen on top with a 800 x 240 pixel resolution, and a 3D intensity slider will enable you to increase or eliminate the 3D effect. A touchscreen below completes the design based around the standard two-screen design.

Dimensions for the device are 5.3 x 2.9 x 0.8 inches (W x L T) and the device weighs in at around the 8 ounce mark.

Now 6 years after the launch of the DS, the new console gets a gyrosensor and motion sensor, with backwards compatibility included on the software, meaning all those games you’ve invested in will still be playable on the new device.

The new 3D handheld can take 3D pictures thanks to its twin cameras on the outside. And if you’re hoping to watch the odd movie in 3D, that’s catered for as well since the device is ready for any 3D movies Hollywood can chuck at it.

The new super handheld will also come with its own browser and automatic updates are available via its built-in Wi-Fi. This can also happen in the background, adding content to the device even when not being used.

Nintendo has also listed a few games that will be available on the console, these include:

Kid icarus – one of the first games available.
A 3d version of nintendogs + cats.

As well as:

Metal Gear Solid,
Fifa
Madden
Assasin’s Creed
Resident Evil
Street Fighter IV
Resident Evil Revelations
Dj Hero

No pricing or release date as yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we get details. Looking forward to this next-gen gaming experience? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Going head-to-head with Project Natal
Nintendo 3DS coming to the UK in October

Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS handheld will be released in October 2010, in time for Christmas but going up against Microsoft’s motion-detecting Project Natal.

Industry sources have told games blog CVG that the Japanese games company will be announcing the device at E3 and are planning to launch it in October. Previously, we only knew that it would be launched before March 2011.

The platform supposedly allows gamers to enjoy 3D without having to wear special glasses. Nintendo simply says that it’s “the new portable game machine to succeed the Nintendo DS series”, referring to the October date as just “rumour and speculation”.

We’ll know for sure whether it’s going to be announced at E3 when the conference takes place later in the year between 15 and 17 June 2010.
