Slow uptake for 3D TV programming

Slow uptake for 3D TV programming

We’re in the midst of a 3DTV revolution. The problem is though, it seems that only one in eight 3DTV owners will actually watch 3D programming this year. A poor showing from the early adopters or simply the result of a lack of broadcasts?

A report by Informa Telecoms & Media indicates that by the end of 2010 there will be 845,000 households globally with a 3D television, but only 101,000 (less than 12%) will be watching 3D material.

The report also suggests that by the time 2016 arrives, there will be 70 million 3DTV households worldwide. But even then, less than a third will be watching 3D television on a regular basis.

Informa says that “this summer’s World Cup will provide an ideal platform for 3D programming” and that “FIFA and Sony have already announced that they will be showing 25 matches in 3D”. Trouble is there’s naff all chance of getting in on this 3D action in the UK as the BBC and ITV aren’t ready to go 3D yet. We’ll have to settle for Blu-ray highlights once the tournament is finished.

Maybe the 3DTV revolution isn’t concerned with TV shows. Maybe it’s all about 3D Blu-rays and 3D gaming.

Are you one of the early 3D adopters? What 3D plans have you got for the year ahead? Drop us a line below.

Sony’s 3DTVs coming in June

April 15th, 2010 Pocket-lint 3D No comments

Starting with the Bravia HX803

Sony has finally confirmed the launch of its first 3DTV, the LED-based Bravia HX803. It’ll be landing in June, complete with free stereoscopic games for the PS3 and a number of 3D accessories.

The Bravia HX803 features a 200Hz refresh rate, 1080p resolution, LED backlighting and the ability to upconvert 2D content into something that vaguely approximates 3D, though it obviously won’t be as good as a regular 3D bit of content. It’ll be arriving in either 40-inch or 46-inch sizes and there’s inbuilt Freeview HD.

There’s another couple of models too. There’s the HX903, which adds better contrast and a 400Hz refresh rate, and is available in 46-inch and 52-inch screen sizes. Then there’s the LX903, which is only 200Hz, but comes with two pairs of 3D glasses. It’s available in 40-inch and 60-inch sizes.

PS3s will be getting a firmware upgrade that makes them compatible with 3D games, and four 3D titles will be released onto the Playstation Network that will be freely downloadable by people purchasing a Bravia 3DTV. There’ll be Wipeout, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, PAIN and Super Stardust HD. Sony says there’ll be another firmware update later in the year to enable 3D Blu-ray compatibility.

Sony’s existing 3D Blu-ray player, the S470, will similarly be getting a firmware update in time for the launch in June, and a new model – the S570 – ?will be rolled out too in May and come with 3D playback right out of the box. Sony’s home cinema systems, including the BDV-E370, also works with 3D.

There’s no pricing yet for the HX803, HX 903 and LX903, but as soon as we get some more info there, we’ll let you know. Despite Sony claiming pre-orders have started on sony.co.uk, we couldn’t find anything on the site. Let us know if you have any luck on that front.
